Open Call – Admissions 2025-2026

The Master of Science in “Sustainable Energy Systems” (MSc in SES), offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the University of West Attica, builds upon the legacy of the well-established postgraduate programs MSc in Energy and MSc in Energy Systems, leveraging more than twenty years of successful partnership with the internationally recognized Heriot-Watt University (UK). Since 2006, these programs have contributed substantially to the systematic education and professional development of highly specialised scientists, addressing the challenges of a rapidly evolving energy landscape.

Drawing on the academic and research experience of the Research Team of the Soft Energy Applications and Environmental Protection Laboratory and the respected history of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, demonstrated, amongst others, through:

(a) the successful completion of numerous research projects, including TILOS (Horizon 2020)Big Data for Energy (BD4RNG – Horizon 2020)Interreg MED PRISMIPRISMI Plus, and NESOI (Horizon 2020)

(b) established collaborations with leading research institutes, such as the National Observatory of Athens, the National Center for Research and Technological Development (CERTH), and the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR), under a series of flagship initiatives including CLIMPACT-IIJustReDINISOS, and DARWEN research programs

(c) successful partnerships with the municipalities of AthensPetroupolisIlion, and Halandri, as well as with the island municipalities of NisyrosKythera–AntikytheraHalkiTilos, and

(d) long-term collaborations with leading utilities and industrial partners in the field of energy, including the Public Power Corporation (PPC)TEMAKDIMAND and MAS S.A.,

the MSc in SES focuses on the design of Energy Systems, advancing developments in the fields of Renewable Energy and Energy Saving through the integration of Energy Storage TechnologiesGreen ElectromobilityHybrid Energy Solutions and Marine Energy Technologies, reflecting at the same time on topics of interest such as the Integrated Energy Transition of Island Regions and the Analysis of Energy Markets, approached from the standpoint of Sustainable Development.

The program is delivered in English, providing students with direct access to both state-of-the-art international scientific knowledge and innovative technological solutions, closely aligned with the requirements of the sustainable energy transition. Graduates of the program are prepared for advanced energy roles in the energy sector, while also enabled to pursue further studies at the highest academic level, leading to a PhD. The MSc courses are delivered on weekday afternoons (17:30–21:30), typically two days per week, on the university premises, ensuring convenient accessibility and parking facilities.

The MSc in SES (Government Gazette 3884 / Issue B / 21.07.2025) offers two modern specialisation tracks of strategic relevance:

  • Renewable Energy Systems
  • Sustainable Energy Systems Design

The educational process is enhanced through lectures delivered by distinguished scientists and professionals from the energy sector, hands-on training utilizing advanced laboratory and computational infrastructure, participation in scientific and professional conferences and active involvement of the students in ongoing research projects of the Soft Energy Applications and Environmental Protection Laboratory.

The MSc in SES program comprises a total workload of 90 ECTS and may be completed in three or four academic semesters, in accordance with current legislation.
